Spinal cord injuries and unique treatment options
Among the most difficult types of injuries to treat are spinal cord injuries. In many cases, they do not heal, or the level of healing is very limited.
Part of the reason for this is a lack of regeneration by the nerve cells that were injured in the initial accident. They need to create these long nerve fibers to offer a full range of motion again, but they can’t do it, in part because scar tissue grows at the injured places. This scar tissue blocks the nerves and they stop growing.
Researchers are always looking for new ways to treat these injuries, and it’s important to consider the developments they make. Sometimes, finding a cure or a breakthrough means looking at unique options.
For instance, one group used a cancer drug known as epothilone. What they found was that, while it did not stop scar tissue from forming, it reduced it. At the same time, it impacted the nerve cells by stimulating growth. All of this helped with motor skills.
This research was done on animals, so it remains to be seen if it will help humans in the same way, but it does show great promise. It also shows just how far out of the box many scientists have to think if they’re going to find a cure for a very serious ailment like this.
