What to do if you are injured on the job

When people are injured on the job, there are crucial steps to follow in order to receive workers’ comp.

Many employers in New York and across the nation are required to offer workers’ compensation benefits to people who are injured on the job. Workers may be hurt in a workplace accident or while performing their normal occupational duties. People may also develop a long-term condition as a result of exposure to certain workplace conditions over a period of time.

Whatever the case may be, there are some important steps employees should follow if they become injured or develop a condition that stems from their employment.

Notify the employer

It is crucial that workers notify their employer as soon as possible after an accident or injury occurs. People should keep in mind that if they do not notify their manager or supervisor of the injury within a certain period of time, they run the risk of having their workers’ compensation benefits denied.

When people are diagnosed with an occupational condition, such as carpal tunnel syndrome from excessive typing or lung cancer from the inhalation of chemical and fumes, they must alert their employer as soon as they receive the diagnosis.

Receive medical attention

Once the employer is aware of the incident and injury, he or she can send the worker to the appropriate medical professional for help. Not all physicians may be covered under the employer’s workers’ compensation program, making it important for the worker to contact their employer first.

People may require x-rays, screening tests or prescription medication and must go to a facility that is approved under the program. In addition to an initial medical visit, workers’ compensation often covers rehabilitation and social work depending on the circumstances surrounding the situation.

Fill out required documents

There are workers’ compensation documents that must be filled out and returned to the employer in a timely manner. Having these papers filled out completely and properly maximizes that chances of having the case approved and may also expedite the processing of the case as well.
